10 Diy Christmas Dcor Ideas

Save a bit of money this festive season by making your own Christmas décor using these budget-friendly ideas…

Shoe boxes, used gift and appliance boxes or any other boxes you have lying around can be covered in wrapping paper and used as centrepieces or place cards.

1. Repurpose old boxes

Shoe boxes, used gift and appliance boxes or any other boxes you have lying around can be covered in wrapping paper and used as centrepieces or place cards.

2. Add a bit of shine

Everyday items like lanterns and candelabras, jewellery and photo frames can be transformed into a wonderful shimmering display. Simply apply a coat of metallic spray paint onto each accessory and sprinkle some glitter over them for that extra sparkle.

Alternatively, you could put last year's baubles to good use by fastening a length of silver or gold ribbon onto each one and hang them above the holiday table.

3. Reclaim old wood

Revamp old wood into wonderful festive décor. Using some chalk paint, draw Christmas themed patterns and images on a board or write celebratory words in bold, swirly print to give the wood a rustic look. Once done, put the board up on a mantel or somewhere you can show it off.

Weave some ribbon, feathers, bells and baubles into some foliage to create a fancy Christmas themed garland, which you can run along a wall or staircase banister.

If you’re handy with some tools, you could also cut some reclaimed wood into a Christmas tree and dress it up using handmade decorations.

Another idea you could try involves applying Rust-Oleum chalkboard spray onto a scrap board and adding your own holiday greetings onto it using some white chalk.

4. Create magical foliage

To create a magical display, wrap some fairy lights around bare tree branches and pine cones, and arrange these in a vase, on a tray or table.

As an alternative to using a fake tree, use large branches to create a different kind of festive cheer. You can decorate these using homemade trimmings and ornaments.

5. Window wonderland

An old window frame is perfect for displaying last year's ornaments. Spray paint the frame using white paint to give it a ‘snowy’ look. From there, string the ornaments together and hang them in the window to create a window wonderland.

Instead of using a fake Christmas tree, gather some branches and decorate them using homemade trimmings.

6. Deck the halls with greenery

There are plenty of shrubs and small trees that can be used to make a wreath or add a dash of greenery to your holiday home.

Use freshly cut foliage and weave some ribbon, feathers, bells and baubles into it. Once its complete, mount your wreath on a wire frame for a stunning festive look. You could also make a fancy Christmas themed garland, which you can run along a wall or staircase banister.

7. Holiday scents

For a memorable Christmas, secure some pine springs and cinnamon sticks onto napkins using cotton twine. These will release a pleasant aroma throughout the house.

8. Light up your table

Using large glass vases around the dining table is always a good idea, especially because they reflect light. Gather three or four vases and arrange them on your table. Plant a candle in each one and scatter some red berries or ornaments and a bit of greenery around the vases to create a festive centrepiece.

Additionally, you could dress up your table using recycled glass food jars. The trick is to layer your jars so that you get the colours right. Start with a layer of baking soda, which can be used as fake snow, and then add berries and top things off with some plants.

If you’re not interested in having a colourful Christmas, select a single colour for your table setting and combine this with crisp, white accessories.

9. Seasonal seating

Burlap ribbon and sprigs of greenery are a stylish alternative to decorating dining chairs. Arrange the shrubs and plants into wreaths and use the burlap ribbon to fix them onto the back of the chairs.

10. Modern celebrations

Don't overdress the dining table. A few colourful decorations look stunning with a white table setting.
